Course Description
This course focuses on the power of sound to create more immersive and engaging game experiences.
Students will build on the synthesis and recording techniques from ATLS 3000 Sound, and design playful experiences that leverage sound to increase emotional impact, impart meaning, and convey narrative effectively. Additionally, students will analyze existing examples of sound used in games, explore procedural music generation, and implement spatial audio environments as they develop several original game audio projects.
Course Objectives
Students who successfully complete this course will:
Critical Thinking & Theory / History:
- Analyze existing media for effective sound
- Strengthen vocabulary to explain and discuss sound experiences
- Explore the history of Sound used in games
Design/Creative:
- Design and evaluate audio experiences for games
- Focus on the storytelling, emotional, and informational impacts of sound on players
Technical:
- Implement designed sound experiences in game environments and in code
- Learn techniques for procedural and algorithmic composition
- Strengthen MIDI, DAW and sound synthesis skills
